When watching documentaries of The Beatles and looking at vintage photos, the fur jacket would pop up adorned by all four Beatles either separately or in a group event. The combination of the organic expression on John’s face and the alure of the jacket inspired this portrait.

Poppies are another one of my favorite flowers; let’s face it, I love flowers PERIOD! The complementary colors of orange and blue work together so well; warmth and cool colors. The crescent was inspired from the crescent moon, some say it is the symbol of fertility. The butterfly? Transformation: maybe indicative of the transformation from the cold of winter and warmth of late spring; the transformation from dormancy to budding trees and flowers.

Everyone has memories of the old carriage bridge at Colt State Park. Back in the day it was a one lane bridge where one person would have to pause and wait for an auto to pass over and then pass themselves. I remember for a short period of my very young adult life, there were statues poised on platforms on the bridge. Its vintage presence makes for beautiful compositions viewed by many angles, distances, and seasons.

Kathy S. and I used to enjoy local day trips and sightseeing. On one summer excursion we noticed the beautiful cotton-like pom-pom flowers and began photographing them. Loving the species of this particular flower, we dug some up and planted them in our yards. Kathy left this realm years ago and to this day the Joe-Pye weed that I took home grows in my front yard greeting the sunrise. The dragonfly, a symbol of transformation, seemed appropriate to include in the painting.

A family member sent me a photo of East Chop Lighthouse poised above a rising field of beach roses at sunset. My imagination ran wild with the scene and behold, a fantasy land composition of the Martha’s Vineyard lighthouse.

What is it that makes sunflowers so popular among people? What inspired Van Gogh to paint 11 paintings of sunflowers amounting to 87 flowers all together? Rumor has it that scientific studies suggested that the bright round yellow flower gives the viewer a sense of well being and increases the feeling of happiness. It is rumored that the sight of sunflowers releases the endorphins in our bodies; the happy hormone. Whatever it is, I enjoy painting them and people enjoy viewing them.

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon yet it was me who was feeling a bit under the weather. The lilacs were radiant, in full bloom and the aroma of the plant blew through the open windows of my home. With my plein air kit in one hand and a warm cup of tea in the other, I meandered outside to paint the lovely sight swaying in a mild breeze. The scent was intoxicating. The whole package was the perfect placebo to wellness.

Sunflowers celebrate the warm lazy, hazy days of summer and announce the onset of autumn. The sight of them tends to stimulate an inner glow. Painting them is an ongoing desire for me especially since there are so many different species of the plant. Be prepared to see more of these as originals and in my print collection soon.
